WHAT ARE EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS AND HOW DO THEY IMPACT YOUNG ADULTS?

Executive functions are cognitive skills that are critical in managing daily life and in achieving our goals. They include: time management, organization, planning/prioritizing, and task initiation, among others.

Individuals who struggle with executive function skills can experience negative impacts to their schooling, career, and relationships. It is common for young adults to find that as the amount of responsibility in their lives increases, so too does their difficulty meeting the demands of those responsibilities. Examples throughout young adulthood include:

  • Difficulty with the planning and initiation of tasks related to the college application process;
  • Struggling with the time management skills necessary to transition from the relative oversight of high school academics to the often overwhelming independence of the college experience;
  • Learning to prioritize and manage multiple “adult responsibilities” at once (e.g., bill paying, appointment scheduling and follow through, navigating the maze of health insurance);
  • Managing jobs in the professional workforce that have expectations with regard to autonomy and independence, particularly with regard to punctuality, maintenance of workloads, and appropriate communication of progress.

IF I HAVE EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING STRUGGLES, DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE ADHD?

Not necessarily. Many individuals without any diagnoses will struggle with executive function skills, especially during transitions in their lives. Executive function difficulties are also common in individuals with other psychiatric or neurodevelopmental conditions, including anxiety, depression, autism, and learning disorders. However, difficulties with executive functions are a core feature of ADHD and if you have significant struggles in this area, ADHD may be a possibility. If you have concerns about this or if your Executive Function Coach believes this may be an issue for you, you can seek an ADHD evaluation here at LIKEMIND.
