Executive Functioning Services
WHAT ARE EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS AND HOW DO THEY IMPACT YOUNG ADULTS?
Executive functions are cognitive skills that are critical in managing daily life and in achieving our goals. They include: time management, organization, planning/prioritizing, and task initiation, among others.
Individuals who struggle with executive function skills can experience negative impacts to their schooling, career, and relationships. It is common for young adults to find that as the amount of responsibility in their lives increases, so too does their difficulty meeting the demands of those responsibilities. Examples throughout young adulthood include:
- Difficulty with the planning and initiation of tasks related to the college application process;
- Struggling with the time management skills necessary to transition from the relative oversight of high school academics to the often overwhelming independence of the college experience;
- Learning to prioritize and manage multiple “adult responsibilities” at once (e.g., bill paying, appointment scheduling and follow through, navigating the maze of health insurance);
- Managing jobs in the professional workforce that have expectations with regard to autonomy and independence, particularly with regard to punctuality, maintenance of workloads, and appropriate communication of progress.
IF I HAVE EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING STRUGGLES, DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE ADHD?
Not necessarily. Many individuals without any diagnoses will struggle with executive function skills, especially during transitions in their lives. Executive function difficulties are also common in individuals with other psychiatric or neurodevelopmental conditions, including anxiety, depression, autism, and learning disorders. However, difficulties with executive functions are a core feature of ADHD and if you have significant struggles in this area, ADHD may be a possibility. If you have concerns about this or if your Executive Function Coach believes this may be an issue for you, you can seek an ADHD evaluation here at LIKEMIND.
HOW WILL EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING COACHING HELP ME?
If you find that you have a hard time getting started on and completing tasks, are constantly late in getting to class or meetings, make careless mistakes in your work or don’t get it done on time, you will benefit from Executive Function (EF) Coaching!
EF Coaching is specifically designed to assist you in learning and utilizing the above-noted skills. You can design a coaching plan that will meet your specific needs, from weekly or biweekly half-hour sessions to a more hands-on approach with multiple check-ins per week.
EF COACHING PACKAGES & FEES
|During your intake session, you will meet your Executive Functioning (EF) Coach virtually and she will assess your current issues/challenges both through direct interaction and using a written assessment tool. During this session, you and your coach will develop a personalized treatment plan made up of whichever of the components listed below work best for you.
|In Package 1, you will meet with your EF Coach on a weekly basis for 1/2 hour 1:1 virtual sessions. During this time, you will work directly with your coach on your specific presenting issues. You will also be provided with one check-in with your coach at another time through the course of that week.
|In Package 2, you will meet with your EF Coach on a weekly basis for 1/2 hour 1:1 virtual sessions. During this time, you will work directly with your coach on your specific presenting issues. You will also be provided with up to three check-ins with your coach at designated times through the course of that week.
|STEP DOWN SERVICES
|As you make progress through your work in Package 1 or Package 2, you and your EF Coach may decide that you no longer need the same level of coaching. Our Step Down Services allow you to reduce the time spent with your coach on direct coaching (this level provides 15 minute 1:1 coaching sessions with one check-in) and to space the sessions out to biweekly or even monthly, depending on your needs/progress. It is often helpful to combine the Step Down Level with Digital Coaching services.
|Digital Coaching is an add on service that allows your EF Coach to provide you with up to 5 digital check-ins/reminders per week.This service can be added on to any of our other services (Package 1, Package 2, or our Step Down Services). Digital coaching may include calendar reminders, text or email prompting, encouragement, or reminders. You and your EF Coach will decide what is best suited to your specific needs.
